5 Surprising Habits That Age Your Skin

January 1, 2023

Your skin changes as you age. This is true for everyone. However, it isn’t just getting older that can negatively affect your appearance. There are many everyday habits that contribute to aging and that can make you look older than you actually are.

The good news is that understanding these habits and changing your lifestyle can improve the appearance of your skin and prevent premature aging.

Sleeping on Your Stomach

While a lot of people find it comfortable to sleep on their stomachs, this isn’t very good for your skin. That’s because gravity is working against you in these situations. Your skin will likely sag during the night and staying face down for prolonged periods will lead to decreased elasticity.

In addition, when you sleep on your stomach, you’re applying pressure to the skin on your face. This can cause swelling and reinforce the lines on your face. Sleeping on your stomach also causes your face to rub against your pillow, and this friction can irritate your skin and make it more prone to wrinkles and other skin issues.

Neglecting to Cleanse Your Face

Out of all the skincare tips you’ve likely heard, there’s a good chance that “washing your face” is a common suggestion. There’s good reason for that. If you do not cleanse your face regularly, your pores can become clogged, you could experience blackheads and other skin issues, and your skin will look duller and more lifeless.

There’s a difference between washing your face and truly cleansing it. Using a gentle cleanser on your skin will eliminate makeup, dirt, oil, grime, and other build up on your face. This will leave you looking younger and more refreshed. It’s important to care for your skin when you cleanse. Use soft, circular motions rather than pressure and scrubbing and choose products that don’t irritate your skin.

Getting a facial can help you cleanse your skin, making it look brighter and younger. It will also improve circulation in your face and this will help nourish your skin and leave it feeling great.

Overusing Skincare Products

Using too many skincare products can clog your pores, dry out your skin, and cause your skin to look older than you are. While skincare is certainly important, you’ll want to operate in moderation. Avoid overwhelming your skin, drying it out, or irritating it by applying too many products to your skin.

If you notice that your skin feels dry, that you’re breaking out, or that you’re developing a rash or another issue, think about how many products you’re using and whether you should cut back a bit.

Excessive Drinking

Drinking too much alcohol is bad for your skin and it can cause premature aging. It can dehydrate you, inflame your skin, create redness and uneven skin, and much more. Reducing the amount of alcohol you drink and giving your skin (and your body) more time to recover in between drinking sessions can help prevent premature aging.

Drinking water alongside alcohol is also a good idea. This will counteract the dehydration and help keep your skin looking and feeling soft and supple.

Using the Wrong Type of Makeup

Certain makeup can clog your pores, irritate your skin, and cause you to look older than the date on your driver’s license. This can seem ironic, since you’re probably using makeup to help you look your best, but it could actually be detrimental. If you find that your skin isn’t looking as youthful as it could, you might want to switch up your makeup.
